Pohon sagu (Metroxylon sago) memiliki potensi besar untuk menjadi sumber mata pencaharian yang berkelanjutan bagi masyarakat yang tinggal di sekitar lahan gambut. Tanaman ini berasal dari bagian timur Indonesia, khususnya Maluku dan Papua, di mana tanaman ini dikonsumsi sebagai makanan pokok1<\/sup>. Kelapa sawit mencakup 5,5 juta hektar di Indonesia dan 95% berada di Papua2<\/sup>. Sagu sangat tahan banting, mampu tumbuh di tanah yang netral hingga sangat asam, tanah organik dan tanah mineral dan bahkan menoleransi tanah dengan kadar belerang tinggi. Sagu dapat bertahan hidup di air payau dan tahan terhadap hama dan penyakit, kekeringan yang berkepanjangan, banjir dan badai3<\/sup>. Bahkan, tanaman ini tumbuh subur di lahan gambut dan berkinerja lebih baik dengan banjir yang sesekali terjadi, sehingga tidak perlu mengeringkan lahan gambut untuk menumbuhkannya. Selain itu, sagu tidak membutuhkan pupuk tambahan dan hampir tidak memerlukan perawatan. Dibutuhkan waktu 12-15 tahun untuk mencapai kematangan, mencapai ketinggian 15 meter4<\/sup>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sagu hanya berbunga sekali seumur hidupnya dan pada saat itu nutrisi yang tersimpan berubah menjadi pati. Memanen di saat ini memastikan hasil panen yang maksimal. Ketika dipanen di tempat, pohon ditebang dan batangnya dibelah5<\/sup>. Setelah itu, empulur dikerok dan digiling menjadi bubuk, yang kemudian dicampur dengan air dan disaring melalui kain. Pati kemudian mengendap dalam sebuah wadah. Produk yang dihasilkan adalah tepung sagu yang memiliki pasar nasional dan internasional. Ada banyak wacana tentang potensi sagu untuk menggantikan beras di Indonesia. Produktivitas sagu enam kali lipat dari padi dan kemampuannya beradaptasi dengan lingkungan ekstrem memberikan keunggulan untuk bertahan dalam cuaca ekstrem yang disebabkan oleh perubahan iklim6<\/sup>. Ketergantungan Indonesia pada impor beras dari negara-negara tetangga membuatnya rentan terhadap kenaikan harga internasional, yang dapat menyebabkan inflasi dalam negeri. Sagu tampaknya sangat cocok untuk meningkatkan ketahanan pangan Indonesia, tetapi mengubah selera dan preferensi masyarakat adalah hal yang berbeda.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Produktivitas sagu di lahan gambut sudah terlihat di Provinsi Riau. Hingga saat ini, terdapat 61.689 ha perkebunan sagu di Riau, menjadikannya penghasil sagu terbesar di Indonesia7<\/sup>. Produksinya sebagian besar (90%) berada di Kabupaten Kepulauan Meranti. Di kawasan ini, pohon sagu tumbuh di lahan gambut dengan kedalaman 100-300 cm dan lebih dalam. Menurut buku panduan Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), pohon sagu yang tumbuh di lahan gambut dalam menghasilkan lebih sedikit pati dan membutuhkan waktu lebih lama untuk matang (lebih dari 12-17 tahun) dibandingkan dengan pohon sagu yang tumbuh di lahan gambut dangkal, yang membutuhkan waktu 8-12 tahun. Satu pohon dapat menghasilkan 150-250 kg pati 8<\/sup>. Produk makanan lokal yang dihasilkan dari pati sago adalah mie, kerupuk, dan kue9<\/sup>. Selain itu, ada juga sagu parut kering, atau sapuring, <\/i>digunakan sebagai pakan ternak ayam dan sapi.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Di Desa Sungai Tohor terdapat 14 pabrik pengolahan yang mengumpulkan sagu dari petani dalam bentuk tual, yaitu batang sagu yang panjangnya 1 meter10<\/sup>. Harga satu tual saat ini adalah Rp60.000. Tepung sagu olahan yang diekspor ke Malaysia dijual dengan harga Rp2.000\/kg. Namun, Haris Gunawan, Deputi Bidang Penelitian dan Pengembangan Badan Restorasi Gambut dan Mangrove (BRGM), merasa bahwa dengan harga jual yang rendah ini, pasar menjadi stagnan dan ia ingin mengembangkan rantai nilai. BRGM mengadakan acara di desa tersebut yang disebut Festival Sagu Nusantara, yang diadakan pada tanggal 14-15 Maret 2020. Haris berharap acara ini dapat menginspirasi masyarakat yang terlibat dalam perdagangan sagu untuk membuat inovasi produk sagu yang bernilai lebih tinggi. Sejalan dengan misi mereka untuk merestorasi lahan gambut di Indonesia, BRGM juga berupaya mengembangkan mata pencaharian yang ramah gambut dan sagu merupakan salah satu solusi yang potensial.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

BRGM mendorong penanaman sagu di lahan gambut untuk restorasi. Sistem produksi sagu meningkatkan penyimpanan air di lahan yang ditanami dengan meningkatkan infiltrasi tanah, mengurangi kecepatan air di saluran, dan mengurangi aliran di permukaan6<\/sup>. Hasilnya, jika ditanam di lahan gambut, sagu dapat memitigasi banjir dan juga menjaga kelembaban gambut, yang sangat penting untuk mencegah kebakaran. Sampai saat ini, belum ada budidaya sagu di Kalimantan Tengah, namun terdapat di Kalimantan Barat dan Kalimantan Selatan.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
